Do’s and Don’ts of Sponsor Me videos.

I’ve been receiving a lot of sponsor me videos lately and while I appreciate the interest I get the feeling a lot of you have know Idea what your doing. Here is a few do’s and don’ts. Following this in no way guarantees that you will get sponsored but it definitely won’t hurt.

• Look at the current team. Watch their footage. Take a good honest look at your own footage and skating. If you feel your skating is on par with the current teams then send your footage in. If not be patient and take the time to progress. Sponsorship is not a race. If its going to happen it will happen.

• Do not send your throw away footy. The point of sending a sponsor me video is to show your best stuff. By doing this you are saying to the person watching the video: You’re not worth my time. Here is my kind of ok footy. Why would you not send your best stuff? If you don’t have your best stuff, wait till you do. Labeling your footy as throwaway can only hurt you.

• This has been said time and time again yet I still see it. Do not send skatepark footy unless you are skating tranny. There is a kid in every town across the country feebling his skatepark handrail. It in no way makes you stand out.

• Understand that sponsorship is a two way street. The company does not exist to give you free stuff. They will expect things in return. It is basically a job and you have to do the work to get paid.

• Do not use a trick more than once. What I mean by this is if you hardflip a 7 stair and you hardflip a 10 stair, only use the 10 stair one. If you hardflipped a 10 stair the viewer will assume that you can hardflip a 7 stair. This makes showing both pointless.

• The length of the video is important. Not to short and not to long. Sending in only 10 seconds of footy shows nothing of your skill. I would say around 2 minutes is a good length. This is in no way set in stone. If you have 5 minutes of absolutely mind blowing footy then by all means send it. If you don’t have at least a minute wait until you do. Do not rush just to send something in. This accomplishes nothing.

• Last but not least, enjoy yourself. Do not make your skateboarding about getting sponsored. When someone truly enjoys what they do it shows in their work. Sponsorship is not the end all be all of skateboarding. Have fun and do it for yourself.
